Washington Capitals set to take on Philadelphia Flyers in Noon Showdown

The Washington Capitals looks to rebound from a tough loss against the New York Rangers in a home contest against the Philadelphia Flyers. This will be the first of two contests against the Flyers, in a game that will be aired nationally on television.

These are two of the best teams in the East Division, with a single point separating the third-place Capitals and the second-place Flyers in the standings. Both teams are looking to rebound from a losing result, so there will be a great brand of hockey that will be played by both as they hope to keep their position in the rankings.

Washington is hoping to see the return of Lars Eller, who practiced with the team for the first time in more than a week on Saturday. Eller plays a stellar center position for the Capitals recording a goal, an assist on eight shots thus far in the 2020-21 season.

There is a lot of history between these two teams, as they have been rivals since the Capitals inception during the 1974-75 season, but things got really intense between them during the 1980.

They will look to renew that rivalry today, as the Capitals continue a long-standing tradition of playing hockey on Super Bowl Sunday. Washington has been able to play three games on the same day as the big game before 1988, including one at their old arena the Capital Center during the team’s first season in 1974-75.

The Capitals have been able to play really well prior to the Super Bowl game and has provided the Nations Capital with some special memories especially when the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Football Club) were able to participate in the Championship.

Philadelphia has a 2-1-1 mark in Washington D.C. this season and have been able to earn seven of eight points against the Caps last year.

Washington is going to have to defend Claude Giroux, who has more goals (22) against the team against any other team out there. The Capitals seem to play well when it comes time two-game sets, as the team holds a 4-0-1 record in the first game when they open a two-game set so far this season.

The Capitals have been playing well when it comes time for their power play opportunities, as the team has a 34.6 percent, and have been able to record at least one PPG in their last five home games.

One of the players to watch for on the home side is Nicklas Backstrom, who has recorded points in all but two games this year, has been able to lead the team in scoring with 14 points (5g-9a).
