Grady Named A-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week; Rookie Honor Given to Baker

The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson senior Kellan Grady as A-10 Player of the Week. Duquesne freshman Chad Baker was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 18-24.

In addition to leading the ‘Cats to a pair of wins, Grady finished the week averaging 23 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while torching the nets for 76.2 percent (16-21), including 10-of-14 (.714) from 3-point range. In Davidson’s win over Fordham, the guard from Boston turned in a 24-point, seven-rebound effort, while matching his career-high of seven treys. He followed that performance with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind win at UMass on Sunday.

Baker averaged 11.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in Duquesne’s two games last week. The guard from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, scored a game-high 19 points in leading the Dukes back from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat Rhode Island. He became the sixth player in program history to go 5-of-5 or better from the 3-point arc in the win (he was 5-of-5, from 3-point and 6-of-7 overall). He added five assists and three steals with just one turnover versus the Rams. Baker followed that with four points, two rebounds and a pair of assists versus St. Bonaventure.

Davidson freshman Sam Mennega averaged 8.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two Wildcats wins … Jordy Tshimanga had 10 points and five rebounds, missing just one shot from the field (5-of-6 | .833) in the Flyers game at VCU … Dayton freshman Zimi Nwokeji also scored 10 points with two rebounds for UD … Michael Hughes had two stellar games for Duquesne, tallying a 15-point, 10-rebounds double-double in a win over Rhode Island, followed by 15 points and 12 rebounds against St. Bonaventure for his second double-double of the week … George Mason’s Javon Greene averaged 19 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of Patriots win over Saint Joseph’s … Jared Kimbrough had an unbelievable shooting week, missing just one field goal in 18 attempts (17-of-18 | .944) for 36 total points in two wins for La Salle, including a road win over preseason favorite Richmond … Jeremy Sheppard scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Rhode Island’s comeback win over Fordham … Rhody freshman Ishmael Legget had 12 points and seven rebounds in the rallying win versus Fordham … St. Bonaventure’s Dominick Welch averaged 16.5 points 7.0 rebounds while shooting 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the field and 8-11 (.727) from 3-point range in leading the Bonnies to key wins over VCU and Duquesne.
