Things were red hot in Carnesecca Arena, as two very evenly matched teams in St. John’s and Marquette battled in College Basketball action on Saturday. The Red Storm fell in a heartbreaking loss 73-71.

These two teams were so back and forth throughout the game, and it literally came down to the last seconds of the game, as Julian Champagnie had seconds left on the clock, the game-winning shot and a welt under his eye but sadly was unable to score the ball.

Champagnie awoke in the Second Half of play, as did the rest of his team, as it was a tale of two halves for the Red Storm. Julian led all scoring with his 20 points, which was followed by Greg Williams, Jr who had 15 points and Posh Alexander who rounded out the scoring with nine points.

At first the team looked like they were going to get out shoot by the really balance scoring attack by Marquette, but was able to find a great rhythm and offensive momentum in the Second Half. Leading the way for Marquette was D.J. Carton who had 14 points, Carton was followed by Justin Lewis and Greg Elliott who had 13 points each.

Carton had two ESPN Top-10 quality dunks for Marquette at the 15:29 and 15:01 mark respectively. He was just one of the bright spots for the visiting side, who had such a wonderful pace of play to go along with some great defense.

Both teams had some wonderful defense overall, as the Red Storm also showed some impressive blocks and solid stops of the Marquette offense. One of the leaders on the defensive side of the ball is Alexander who had five steals during the course of the game. At the end of the game the Red Storm had the ball in their hands and a great opportunity to score, but it was the Marquette defense that was able to shut them down.

St. John’s will look to rebound quickly from this loss as they travel to Storrs, Connecticut on Monday to take on the University of Connecticut for a game that is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
