Following the postponement of the Red Storm’s BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle matchup against Texas Tech, St. John’s has added a game for this Wednesday night against BYU at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Tip-off between the Johnnies and the Cougars is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN2.
The game will be played as part of the Roman Legends Classic, which has shifted from a bracketed format to a “showcase” format after Vanderbilt dropped out due to COVID concerns. BYU will play USC on Tuesday before taking on St. John’s the following day. On Thursday, UConn will play USC before Florida and Boston College close the event.
St. John’s won the Legends Classic in 2018 when the tournament was held in Brooklyn. The Johnnies downed Cal in the opener before outlasting VCU in overtime to claim the title. Shamorie Ponds set a Legends Classic record by scoring 67 points in two games.
St. John’s and BYU will meet for the ninth time in the history of the two programs and the first since 1990. The Johnnies are 7-1 all-time against BYU and have won the past six meetings between the two teams, including a matchup on Dec. 8, 1990, that saw Malik Sealy score 26 points in the championship game of the Cougar Classic in Provo. St. John’s also participated in and won the Cougar Classic in 1975.
BYU enters the week with a record of 3-0, having picked up home wins over Westminster, New Orleans and Utah Valley. The Cougars, who went 24-8 a season ago, received votes in both the preseason Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls
