Downey Named A-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, Te-Biasu Chosen for Rookie Honor

The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Fordham junior Kaitlyn Downey as A-10 Player of the Week. VCU freshman Sarah Te-Biasu was selected as Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played during the opening week of college basketball Nov. 25-29.

Kaitlyn Downey, a forward and captain, led the Rams to a season-opening win at Stony Brook on Wednesday with a massive 16-point, 20 rebound double-double, becoming just the seventh Fordham student-athlete to reach the latter milestone in program history. Downey, a Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., native, did all her damage in just 30 minutes, hitting 5-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and hit a team-high 3-of-4 free throws, adding three assists to just one turnover. Five of Downey’s rebounds came on the offensive glass, as well.

Te-Biasu scored 19 points in her collegiate debut and averaged 12.7 points across her first three games to lead all VCU players in the GSE Tipoff. The Montreal, Quebec, native he also led the team in assists with 3.3 per game and was tied for second in rebounding on the team with 4.7. She shot 50 percent from 3-point range for the week and 53.6 percent overall from the floor.


Chloe Welch averaged 20.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in Davidson’s three season-opening games … Erin Whelan scored 25 points on 10-of-16 (.625) shooting in Dayton’s season-opening road victory at Morehead State … Flyer freshman Tenin Magassa had 10 points and six rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the field in the win over MSU … Laia Sole had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double on the road in Duquesne’s opener at Ohio State … Freshman Megan McConnell had seven points on 50 percent (2-of-4) shooting for the Dukes … George Mason’s Daijah Jefferson averaged 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds with three steals and three assists in a 1-1 week for the Patriots … Mason freshman Taylor Jameson tallied 7.5 points, 3.0 assists and five total assists in the Patriots two games … Neila Luma averaged a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds per game in a pair of wins for George Washington, while also recording 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game … GW freshman Ali Brigham scored 10 points per game, recorded 5.5 rebounds per game and shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field in the two Colonial wins.
