Orioles to Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Cal Ripken, Jr.’s Record -Breaking Consecutive Streak

The Baltimore Orioles will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Cal Ripken, Jr.’s record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game on Sunday, September 6, during the 1:05 p.m. ET game against the New York Yankees. The celebration will recognize the iconic moment when Ripken played his 2,131st consecutive game, passing Yankees legend Lou Gehrig, on September 6, 1995.

Prior to that afternoon’s game, Ripken will throw out the ceremonial first pitch to his son, Ryan Ripken, an infielder in the Orioles Minor League system. The pitch, which was recently filmed at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, will be shown at various ballparks at games across Major League Baseball in recognition of the 25th anniversary. Orioles players and coaches will also wear a commemorative ‘2131’ anniversary patch on their right sleeve during Sunday’s game.

To commemorate Ripken’s journey to 2131, the Orioles will launch an exclusive interactive digital experience, Orioles.com/2131, that will feature a collection of content including iconic photos and videos showcasing his career and the historic streak. Fans are encouraged to share their own 2131 memories and submit personal photos and videos on Orioles.com/2131Memories by Friday, September 4, for a chance to be featured on Orioles.com and on MASN’s broadcast during the celebration on Sunday, September 6. Additionally, at Orioles.com/BirdlandInsider, the Orioles will feature blogs for fans to relive 2131, as Orioles employees share behind-the-scenes stories from the days leading up to September 6, 1995.

During the game, Ripken will join the MASN television and Orioles Radio Network game broadcasts, to reflect on the 25th anniversary of the day he broke Gehrig’s streak. Special ‘2130’ and ‘2131’ graphics will be digitally displayed on the Warehouse through the MASN broadcast for fans at home, mimicking the iconic banners displayed on the Warehouse during August and September of 1995. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation will also be featured as part of the virtual community booth during the day’s broadcast.

As part of a league-wide recognition of this anniversary, MLB.com will publish an extensive digital package detailing the historic streak and the legendary performance of baseball’s Iron Man. More than 15 stories related to Ripken and the streak will be shared on MLB platforms, with former players, coaches, staff, and media detailing their memories of Ripken and his journey. Beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 6, “Iron: The Legacy of Cal Ripken, Jr.” will stream on Orioles.com, for a look back at Ripken’s career. Additionally, on Sunday evening at 8:00 p.m., MLB Network will air “The Streak: 25 Years Later” a new television special featuring an in-depth interview with Ripken as he watches memorable moments from that night 25 years ago.

Ripken played in a Major League-record 2,632 consecutive games before taking himself out of the lineup on Sunday, September 20, 1998. During “The Streak,” he won the 1982 American League Rookie of the Year award along with the AL Most Valuable Player award in 1983 and again in 1991. He retired from baseball after the 2001 season with the most career home runs as a shortstop (345). Throughout his Orioles career, Ripken played in 19 All-Star Games and was named the All-Star Game MVP in 1991 and 2001. In 2007, Ripken was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Since leaving baseball, he has focused his attention on growing the game at a grassroots level. Through his business, Ripken Baseball, and his family’s nonprofit organization, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, he is bringing the game to kids across the country in areas of need. This year, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is celebrating breaking ground on their 100th Youth Development Park that is to be located at Reedbird Park in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of South Baltimore. The project will be completed in partnership with Baltimore City Recreation & Parks and the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership.
