VIDEO: Head Coach Walt Hopkins along with stars Layshia Clarendon and Kia Nurse share these thoughts after the team’s loss to the Phoenix Mercury
The New York Liberty continue to improve on the floor as the 2020 WNBA Season progresses, but in the latest of results fell to the Phoenix Mercury 96-66 in WNBA action on Sunday.
Leading the way for the New York offense was Kia Nurse who had 16 points, followed by Amanda Zahui B who had 11 points and Layshia Clarendon who had 10 points. The Ladies played though all game long setting up some wonderful plays, one of the things the team will probably look to improve upon will be their rebounding.
It seemed throughout the game that the Liberty had so many great shots fall short and not only short but right in the hands of the Phoenix Mercury. When you have a great offense like the Mercury missed rebounds are crucial to the momentum of the game.
Phoenix had so many offensive weapons though for the Liberty defense to try to shut down, the pressure from players like Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner helped to lead Phoenix to the victory. Former Liberty and North Babylon-native Bria Hartley shined in the game against her former team, cashing in on some beautiful pick-and-roll plays for 27 points.
There was a time during the game that the Liberty went on a great run cashing on on the fact that Mercury had to give Griner a bit of a rest, as the Center was in some foul trouble. As soon as Griner returned to the game the Mercury were able to regain their offensive form. It had seemed during that time that the Liberty had lost whatever legs they had.
Overall though Head Coach Walt Hopkins has to be really proud of his team, who showed grit and tenacity throughout the game. New York will have some time to recuperate and get ready for another tough test as they will face the Minnesota Lynx in a game that is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on August 5th.
