Heartbreak City for New York in Quarterfinal Loss to Portland in MLS is Back Tournament

VIDEO: Hear from New York City FC Head Coach Ronny Deila and Forward Gary Mackay-Stevens after the team’s 3-1 loss to the Portland Timbers in the Quarterfinal Round of the MLS is Back Tournament

There were plenty of challenges along with plenty of memorable moments for New York City FC, but at the end of the MLS is Back Tournament they fell to the Portland Timbers by a final of 3-1.

New York City FC were able to get an early lead as Jesus Medina scored an early goal for the Boys in Blue. Portland and their amazing offense was just to much as goals from Sebastian Blanco, Diego Valeri and Andy Polo helped to propel them to the next round of the MLS is Back Tournament.

NYCFC had so much good momentum prior to the match versus Portland seeing back-to-back wins over Inter Miami and Toronto, could not find the magic touch against the Timbers. New York has never had much success going up against Portland and that trend continues.

Portland was able to play some outstanding defense frustrating the Boys in Blue, as they were unable to create the opportunities that they normally do on the field.

There are so many emotions for New York City FC and their time in the bubble in Florida, the team had to qualify to be one of the third-place Quarterfinal spots and had to learn how to get a lot quicker than the normal pace of a Major League Soccer Season.

Some of the positive storylines for the Boys in Blue was the play of stars like Medina, Anton Tinnerholm, and James Sands and others who will be a huge factor to New York CIty FC next season.
