It is an exciting time to be a New York City FC fan as they are getting ready to take on the Portland Timbers in the MLS is Back Tournament. Both teams will be squaring up in the Quarterfinal Round of the Tournament.
NYCFC will return to action for on Saturday, August 1 at 10:30PM ET (FS1) to meet Portland after the Timbers booked the final spot in the last eight thanks to a penalty shootout victory over FC Cincinnati. Meanwhile New York City FC enters into the Quarterfinal round earning a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC.
The history between New York City FC and Portland during regular season play has been a long one. As Portland handed the boys in blue a tough 1-0 loss during the 2019 season. Portland was able to earn another victory over the Boys in Blue during the 2018 season as well.
This match and this series thus far feels different for NYCFC as they have stars like Anton Tinnerholm contributing some huge plays on the field. Tinnerholm was able to set up the first goal of the game during the Toronto FC match and was a huge reason why the team had a more aggressive and dominant tone on the offensive side of the pitch.
New York City FC is also starting to get great offensive production from Maxi Moralez, who recorded a goal and an assist in the match versus Toronto. Moralez will be called upon to use his speed, along with dynamic play calling ability to help lead New York City FC to the next stage of the MLS is Back Tournament.
As always keeper Sean Johnson will need to be brilliant in goal, as Portland has always been known to be a scoring threat. It will be an exciting one for sure and one that fans of soccer will hopefully check out.
With a positive result on August 1, New York City FC will advance to face either the Philadelphia Union or Sporting Kansas City.
