The Metropolitan Riveters have signed goaltender Sonjia Shelly to a contract for the 2020-21 NWHL season. The 23-year-old Shelly, who starred at St. Lawrence University, made her professional debut last season with the Connecticut Whale.
“Hockey has been my passion since I was little and to have the opportunity to play in the NWHL and possibly inspire others to play is an absolute blessing,” said Shelly, an Illinois native. “My first pro season was a great experience, and I can’t wait to get back on the ice and compete for Isobel alongside my new teammates. I am very excited and appreciative to be part of the Riveters organization.”
Shelly signed with the Whale in 2019 after completing an outstanding four-year collegiate career at St. Lawrence. In 13 appearances last season with the Whale, she posted a .894 save percentage. At St. Lawrence, Shelly ranks in the top ten in school history in every goaltending category. As a senior, she posted a 2.16 GAA and .912 save percentage and had four shutouts.
