Sky Blue FC defender Gina Lewandowski has agreed to a new one-year contract with a one-year option ahead of the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League Season. Per team and league policies, further details were not disclosed.
“I am really excited to be back with Sky Blue for another season,” said Lewandowski. “There have been some great things developing with this club and I am looking forward to being a part of it.”
Lewandowski, 34, made her first appearance for Sky Blue at Yurcak Field on May 25, 2019, against the Portland Thorns, where she started and played for 90 minutes. In the 2019 season, Lewandowski played in 13 games (12 starts) for a total of 1,079 minutes.
“Gina is a fantastic player for Sky Blue who brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team,” said Sky Blue Head Coach Freya Coombe. “She reads the game well and is a fierce competitor both in the air and on the ground.”
Before joining Sky Blue, the Pennsylvania native played for German club FC Bayern Munich (2012-2019) of the Frauen-Bundesliga. During her time with FC Bayern Munich, she won the German League title in 2015 and 2016. Lewandowski played for FFC Frankfurt (2007-2012), taking home the treble (German League title, the DFB Cup, and the UEFA Women’s Cup) in the 2007/2008 season. She was also a part of the team that won the DFB Cup in 2011.
In 2015, she earned her first cap for the United States in an international friendly match against Brazil during the Victory Tour.
“We’re so glad to have Gina re-up her commitment to the club,” said Sky Blue FC General Manager Alyse LaHue. “Having a player come back to her ‘home’ club after an illustrious international career brings an invaluable perspective to a club with tremendous growth aspirations like ours.”
