Toronto FC and New York City FC finished 1-1 in a contested battle on Wednesday nights matchup at Yankee Stadium. When New York City FC first was born into existence one of the first things they did was to be sure to honor all those first responders who serve New York City with the Tunnel of Honor. On this huge match, on this huge day were those lost due to the tragic events of 9/11 that tunnel had a special significance and meaning.
New York City FC played hungry and opened up the scoring in the 6th minute as forward Alexandru Mitrita rifled in a free kick from the top of the box.
The game took a turn in the 40th minute when Toronto City FC forward Jozy Altidore was dragged down in the box by defender Sebastien Ibeagha. After a quick decision from VAR referee Chris Penso decided there was enough to award a penalty kick. Alejandro Pozuelo calmly put the ball in the right corner to tie the game at 1.
Later on in the 78th minute Toronto had a glorious chance to put the game away with a penalty that was ultimately saved by NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
Deep into the last minutes of play NYCFC forward Taty Castellanos went down in the box from a swing by center back Chris Mavinga. After video review it was determined that there was no foul on the play leaving home supporters in disarray.
After the 1-1 tie NYCFC still find themselves in first place and look to continue their strong play Saturday at 12:30 versus the San Jose Earthquakes at Yankee Stadium.
