New York Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles, 9.27

On if Josh Martin has been cleared…

Yes.

On if Martin will be able to play against Jacksonville…

He should be if he gets up to speed.

On if Terrelle Pryor got hurt in practice…

Yeah, he’s got a sore groin.

On what Martin has to do to get up to speed…

Well you’ve got to get in shape first. He’s missed a couple weeks now, and he’s got to get back up to the things we put in. He hasn’t played since preseason.

On to if Marcus Maye is in football shape…

He’s been running every day. He’s been running for a couple weeks now, so his shape is different. Josh hasn’t been doing anything, Marcus has.

On if Pryor got injured yesterday or today…

It was today.

On if he is worried that Pryor’s injury is serious…

We will see how treatment goes and then we will see as the days go on.

On if Pryor’s injury happened in team drills…

He got hurt today.

On how he would assess the play of Blake Bortles this season, and if he is a different player from last season…

I don’t know if he is different. I think they’ve expanded his role more and he’s more comfortable in the offensive scheme. They can light you up in the passing game, and they can turn around and pound the ball as well. They have a different approach every game. Against New England they aired it out a little bit, and they were successful. They ran the ball a lot against Tennessee. They can hurt you a lot of different ways. I think his command of the offense is outstanding, and he knows where to go at all times. You’re not fooling him with too many things.

On if he thinks that the basics of Jacksonville’s offense are the same even without Leonard Fournette…

They are the same. (T.J.) Yeldon and the other one, (Corey Grant) number 30, plays an awful lot. They play when Fournette does play and both of them are great backs in their own right. He brings another element. He’s probably just a tad bigger and a little (more) power, but Yeldon is a bigger back and the other one is a faster back and they kind of run the same plays.

On how frustrating the headset technical difficulties have been…

I mean it’s part of the game. It happens every year. There’s quite a few games that it happens in, so that’s something you have to adjust. That’s why you go over signals all the time, and you kind of move on from there. That’s part of technology. It’s going to be around for a long time, so that’s not a big deal, we just adjust and move on.

On if everyone’s headsets have been having issues or just the offense…

Well he’s the only signal caller, on offense, and Kacy (Rodgers) is on defense. It happens from time to time, in games here and there. It’s happened over the years. We just adjust.

On how often they work on hand signals…

Since the spring. We work on them a lot. We have them, every call that goes in there’s a hand signal for.

On if he had to call timeout in scenarios where the headsets stop working, and if there should be some kind of provision for that…

It’s got to be out consistently. If the whole sideline goes out at the same time, then the other side will have to make a concession to do that, but it one guy goes out and it sputters, you just move on and you play. You don’t waste timeouts doing that. They’re going to have to do it and the referees are going to have to make that call.

On if the game against Jacksonville is a big character test for the team…

I think every week of the season is a character test for us whether we win or lose. It’s a different opponent each week, it brings a different dynamic, and we just have to attack the next week. This week is no different for us.
