New York Jets Transcript-Head Coach Todd Bowles 9/21

On if he’s watched any of the film yet…

I saw half of it. I saw defense and special teams. I’m getting ready to watch the offense in a minute.

On his thoughts of how the defense played in the second half after watching it on film…

(We) definitely didn’t play the way we played in the first half. A guy here or there out of position and we let some plays go that we would like to have back.

On if he was too conservative offensively in the second half…

I thought we were well-balanced on offense. I thought we had some plays dialed up off of what they did. They changed some things around in the second half that negated some of the things we had dialed up. But I thought offensively we had a good game plan that was balanced.

On if he’s perplexed as to why not finishing and penalties are lingering from last year…

No, I’m not perplexed. It’s different things that happen at different times. You don’t want things to happen on a two-point play and some plays he has too much time in the pocket and they can’t cover (receivers) forever. Sometimes the pressure is good and they’re not covering (receivers) at all or are blowing an assignment here or there. With a young team and with certain new guys it’s something we have to iron out that we will take care of.

On if the certain missed assignments are from younger players…

No, no, I’m not saying that at all. I think we can do some things better as coaches and players, that’s from everybody.

On why Robby Anderson hasn’t been a factor…

They’re doing some things different this year with Robby in trying to take him away and other guys have step up if they got somebody (on top of) him.

On what is leading to Anderson’s fumbles from the last two weeks…

He just got to tuck the ball away. When he’s in a crowd he’s got to know when to go down and tuck the ball away.

On if he worries about things getting away from him with a young team…

No, I really don’t. It’s not a concern at all. I know we got good character and I know we’ll fight and I know we have a decent team. I just got to cut down and fix some things.

On if the team is as far long through three games as he thought….

Like I said, we do some good things, but we have to do them more consistently than we’re doing to finish out the ball game. And it’s a guy here or there, we’ll do a better job at that.

On how much of a player getting penalties is on the player or the coaching staff…

Well, the penalties are definitely on the players. Coaches can’t play for them. We understand situations and we know what to do and what not to do. Guys got to be calmer in certain situations.

On how he avoids a loss like yesterday’s lingering…

It’s a 24-hour rule. You got to have tough skin and up here we’re a tough-minded team and it’s not going to drag. We got a couple of days to get some rest, and get some guys back, and get healthy and then we move on to Jacksonville next week. It’s no difference than if we would’ve won the ball game, so we’ll be fine, in that way. I think we’re mentally tough.

On what he thinks Sam Darnold learned last night about himself…

I don’t know if he learned anything about himself. I know he’s competitive and he tries to win every game and he has a fire within that you really can’t see. But in all, I thought he competed his butt off yesterday. I thought yesterday was one of his better ball games from a mental standpoint, and a toughness standpoint, and a grit standpoint and the natural stuff. It is easy to throw when you have time in the pocket and they’re wide open, but when you can move around and make plays happen (that is different). I thought he took care of the ball for the most part until the end of the ball game, obviously when we had to press to try and get something done. But I thought he grew a lot last night. Going in and watching the schedule, after he won the starting job, I thought this would be his toughest game from a scheme-coverage standpoint because of the things that they do on that side of the ball. I thought he handled that well.

On how they came out of the game injury wise…

So far pretty good. I haven’t got the full report yet. I’m still waiting on that. But nothing that I know of was pressing.

On the decision to cut ArDarius Stewart…

That’s all that was there. He was developing, and you got guys coming in every year. You got to compete for your job and some guys beat him out that way. And we like the core that we have. We can’t do anything about the suspension when he was here, but they were playing better in training camp. We draft guys but guys come in as free agents every year and we give everybody a fair shot to make the team and those guys made the most of their abilities.

On what guys can do to help out Darnold more…

We can run it better. We can protect better. We can run routes better. He can make some decisions better but it’s a team effort, it’s not just Sam. I was saying it from that standpoint, I wasn’t saying that people weren’t helping him out. I think we can do a better job all around helping him out.

On Leonard Williams performance yesterday…

I thought Leonard played well. I thought they tried to double him a lot and he got to the quarterback when the ball was out. He took the pressure off the other guys. They sent two or three guys at him almost every other play. But Leonard caused a lot of other people to make plays and that doesn’t shttps://www.newyorkjets.com/how up on the stat sheet. I’m happy with what he did.

On how he thinks Trumaine Johnson has done in the first three games…

He played tough. He gave up a play early I think in one of the games. But he plays tough and he does a lot of things for us. I’m happy with where he is.

On if he’s hopeful that he might get Marcus Maye back against Jacksonville…

It’s something we’ll check on. He’s been doing better. Hopefully with a longer weekend and next week we can get something accomplished there.
