New York Jets Transcript – Head Coach Todd Bowles 8.6

On what made him want to give Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold most of the work today…

Well they are going to play the games and I didn’t see enough work this Saturday, so we needed more work today on certain situations that Josh McCown has been through. There are going to be days when Josh get more reps and there are going to be days when Teddy and Sam get more reps, today was that day.

On if McCown will play Friday

Everybody should be ready to play.

On how he thinks Darnold did…

I’ll check the film, I wasn’t solely looking at Sam, I was some other positions trying to concentrate on that, but I’ll watch the film and we’ll grade him as we normally do.

On how he will deploy the three quarterbacks on Friday…

In my head I have. I have not expressed that to the coaches yet, but we’re going to sit down and talk about it later this week.

On how much the three-man quarterback race last year is helping him get a handle on what he wants to do this year…

Every year is different, but I think I got a good hand on it and a good idea on how I want to handle it. We have to execute and go forward from there.

On Steve McLendon’s injury…

He got a sore leg.

On how Bridgewater has impressed him…

Work ethic, intelligence, driven to get better, very accurate, very good on the run, he has been a great team player, great in the meeting room and for the guys as well. I got to say, this is the best three quarterback combination room I’ve been around from a mental standpoint, so that is great to have.

On how serious McLendon injury is…

Camp.

On Trent Cannon leaving practice early…

I didn’t see him leave early, but as far as I know he is okay. I’ll go check and see when I get in. Guys are going to get nicked up this time of the year so, it gives other guys a chance to play and when those guys come back, they come back. So you don’t worry about it really until the last week of the preseason.

On what made him want to practice Brandon Copeland and Frankie Luvu with the first team…

Athletic guys that I really want to take a look at against the first unit, these guys that peaked over the past few days and I just want to take a better look at them.

On what he thinks of Luvu in particular

He’s got athleticism like I said, he’s got a lot of athleticism. He’s young and he’s learning so I just want to see what he can do. He’s got to keep progressing, he’s one of the guys I’d be interested in seeing in the preseason as it progresses.

On if he considers Darnold being caught up from the days that he missed…

It’s not even a measure, it is something that I don’t think about. He’s got a good feel, he’s comfortable and he is in camp and he is working hard.

On if Chris Herndon is further along than he would think for a rookie tight end…

It’s too early to tell, it’s only been a week. He’s working hard and he’s practicing but after a week of practice without playing any preseason games I don’t know if anybody is further along than they need to be.

On what he has seen in Chad Hansen this camp…

He’s working hard, he’s not getting the ball. Obviously with pass rush and reads and everything else, he’s working hard running his routes and opportunity has to come. He’s practicing just like he did in the spring. He’s working hard, but in the game and later on things will tell as he shows us in the football game. But Chad is doing everything the way he is supposed to.

On if he is concerned about the penalties…

Anytime you have a surplus of guys and almost twice your team you are going to have more mistakes than normal, so that comes with the territory you just have to fight through and sift through the ones and try to cut them down and use them as examples. As training camp goes on they get less and less, and they have started to get less and less so I am happy with the progress we just got to keep grinding.

On most of the offensive penalties coming with Darnold at quarterback…

No, those had nothing to do with Sam, those were just other people making bone-head decisions at the wrong time.

On what has made them elevate Nathan Shepherd towards the first team reps…

He is tough. We rotate different guys there. Obviously Nathan has been there, Foley (Folorunso Fatukasi) has been there, (Henry) Anderson has been there. We put a lot of guys up in there. He’s getting a lot of work there but he also gets a lot of work in sub. He’s one of the guys we want to focus on in doing different things, so in base and then some subs he’ll go in first and next week it’ll probably be Foley, then the next week, it just changes all the time. You try to get the young guys as much experience as possible and the more they can play with the first unit, the faster they can mature.

On if it is a surprise to see what Shepherd has been able to do so far…

No, I don’t think it matters. At the brief time he was at the senior bowl in one-on-ones you could see him going up against guys that were drafted very high, you could see he was a good football player. I don’t think the school matters, if you’re 315 (pounds) and your strong, then you are 315 and strong, whether it is Division I or Division II.

On if there is anyway Jordan Leggett plays in the opener…

It’s questionable. If he doesn’t practice the rest of the week, probably not. If he practices, then maybe.

On if Leggett practiced today…

No, he didn’t.

On if it was Leggett’s knee that held him out of practice…

It’s just maintenance.

On how heavily weighted these preseason games are for Darnold…

It’s a measuring stick for everybody not just Sam. We have a lot of guys fighting to make this team so preseason games, doing it in practice and doing it in preseason when the lights are on, measures up every position.

On how realistic it is for Darnold to overtake two veterans and become the Week One starter…

You got to play preseason games. I’m not into hypotheticals and nothing that hasn’t happened yet but we are going to let him play, then after the fourth preseason (game), sometime that week I’ll make my decision and go from there.

On if McCown is definite to get at least a series on Friday

I did not say that. I said everybody should be ready to play.

On if there is a chance that McCown might not play…

There’s a chance that everybody should be ready to play and I’ll sit down with the coaches at the end of the week and we’ll go from there.

On if he’ll make his decision regarding the starting quarterback after the fourth preseason game…

I said it is possible that I will make my decision after the fourth (preseason game). I’m not pinpointing any decision (when) the guy runs out on the field (Monday night) in Week One, you’ll see who the starter is.
