New York City FC took a huge step to the 2016 MLS Audi Playoffs with the club’s 4-1 victory over the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer action on 9/23/16 at Yankee Stadium.
Leading the way in scoring was David Villa, who scored twice for the boys in blue. Jefferson Mena and Steven Mendoza also tallied goals to help lift the team to a huge victory in front of a rocking crowd at the stadium.
Now fans and supporters of the club need to wait for Saturday as the team will book its ticket into the 2016 MLS Audi Playoffs with either an Orlando City SC tie against D.C. United Saturday, a New York Red Bulls win over the Montreal Impact Saturday or a New England Revolution tie or loss against the Columbus Crew Sunday.
Also having a huge match for New York City FC was Khiry Shelton, who had three assist in the match. Shelton now has three goals and nine assists on the season, including one goal and five assists in his last four games. He has one goal and four assists in three games against Chicago this year.
Important Notes from the match:
- NYCFC is now unbeaten at home in seven consecutive games.
- David Villa scored twice and has 19 goals on the season, one more than his total from a year ago. He is second in MLS in goals scored, one behind Bradley Wright-Phillips of the Red Bulls.
NYCFC moves into sole possession of first place with 48 points, one point in front of Toronto FC and three away from the Red Bulls.

On hand to enjoy the match tonight was New York Knicks Forward Kristaps Porzingis, who got to exchange jerseys with Captain David Villa after the match.
Up next for New York City FC is an away matches at Houston and Washington, D.C. before returning back to Yankee Stadium for the regular season finale against the Columbus Crew on Sunday, October 23. The match between NYCFC and the Crew is set for 4:00 p.m.
