In a match that featured Two of the Best Defensive Clubs in the North American Soccer League and on a Day Where a Defensive Player made his 100 Apperance for the New York Cosmos, it only made sense that Defense was a highlight on 9/17/16 at Shuart Stadium.

The New York Cosmos and FC Edmonton played an extremely physical and exciting match, in the end though neither team was able to find the back of the cage and earned a 0-0 Draw. The first-place New York Cosmos extended their home unbeaten run to 17 straight matches.

Prior to the Start of the Match the Cosmos Honored their Captain and the First Player that was signed by the Club of this reboot era, Carlos Mendes as he made his 100th Career Apperance in the match v FC Edmonton.

“It’s a special night for my family, my friends and the fans that have supported me from day one,” Mendes said. “That’s always great. Each and every day I still try to improve.”

Mendes has touched the lives of many of the players on the club, including that of Defender David Ochieng.

“For me he is like the coolest guy around”, Ochieng said. “When I came here I was a young defender from another country, and he would always try to give me advice. He has meant a lot to me.”

Ochieng was a huge part of the Cosmos Defensive core that was able to keep FC Edmonton off the scoreboard today, as he was called in as a sub for the injured Rovérsio at the 18 Minute Mark.

As for the Offensive side of things for New York had a total of 19 shots, as well as having a 72.0  possession percentile versus the 28.0 for FC  Edmonton.

FC Edmonton’s defense along with the play of Keeeper Matt VanOekel  combined to keep the Cosmos away from the back of the Net.

The Cosmos (9-4-2 Fall, 15-4-6 Combined) remain on top of the NASL’s Fall Season and the Combined Season Standings. The team will now travel to face Indy Eleven on September 24, New York will return to Shuart Stadium on October 2 to host the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in a match set for 4:00 p.m.
