New York City FC forward David Villa and midfielder Kwadwo Poku have been named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Week for Week 21, the league announced on Monday.
Villa was also been nominated for Major League Soccer Goal of the Week for Week 21.
David continued his hot scoring streak, finding the back of the net on two more occasions in Sunday’s 5-3 win over Orlando City SC at Yankee Stadium. Villa, who leads New York City FC with 12 goals has six goals (three braces) in the last four matches.
On the cusp of halftime, left back Angelino served up a pin-point pass from the halfway line to Villa in the Orlando City SC 18-yard box. The former Spain international showcased a soft touch, by trapping the ball with his right foot, shaking defender Sean St. Ledger and firing home the match’s first goal to the near post past Tally Hall.
Villa currently ranks third in goals in MLS, trailing Kei Kamara (15) and Sebastian Giovinco (13). New York City FC’s captain also added an assist on Mix Diskerud’s goal in stoppage time to guarantee all three points.
Poku, who made his third start of the season, had a hand in three of the Club’s goals. The Ghanaian was involved on the final three finishes — Villa’s strike in the 67th, Tommy McNamara’s left-footed blast in the 71st and Mix’s goal in the 93rd.
He has a team-leading six assists in his debut season in MLS.
Villa has been named to an MLS Team of the Week on six occasions, while Poku earned his first nod.
New York City FC will host the Montreal Impact on August 1 at Yankee Stadium, with the two teams set for a 2:00 pm match.
