The New York Cosmos (4-2-0) had four goals to earn a 4-2 victory over FC Edmonton (1-2-2) in a Mother’s Day Matinee at Shuart Stadium in North American Soccer Action on Sunday.
Leading the way in the Cosmos Fourth Victory in the 2015 NASL Spring Season was the Captain Carlos Mendes and his wife who just became parents for the first time, decided to celebrate by scoring two goals to lead the offense.
Mendes struck for the first goal at the Second Minute mark as the Captain was able to cash in on a rebounded opportunity from the FC Edmonton Keeper. Carlos helped to add to the team’s lead at the 36 minute, connecting on a cross from Danny Szetela.
New York continues to show some great chemistry on the offensive side of the ball, as well as tenacity as this club is growing and improving with each match they play.
One example of tenacity was in the 23 minute when Szetela hit the crossbar twice, and the ball eventually found the foot of striker Raúl González Blanco who found the back of the cage.
Leo Fernandes set-up Lucky Mkosana who connected on a beauty of an opportunity at the 49 minute mark to give the Cosmos the 3-1 lead. Thus far Mkosana and Fernandes have been a great combination for the club, this was the second match these two were able to find each other and create a goal for the Cosmos.
FC Edmonton were able to score twice, but it was not enough to earn the victory on this day.
New York will now head on the road for a touch match versus the Carolina RailHawks on May 16, before returning to Shuart Stadium on May 23 to host the San Antonio Scorpions.
