It wasn’t easy but postseason never is, in the end the St John’s Women’s Basketball team (22-10) was able to grind out a 64-56 victory over Army in the First Round of the WNIT on Thursday.
With three players in double-figure scoring, the Red Storm had to survive a late Second Half scare by what was a very talented Army team to move on. After facing the sting of not making the NCAA Tournament, St John’s is looking to prove a point as to why they continue to play, while also being thankful for the opportunity.
As a program, the Red Storm has now won at least one game in all four of their WNIT appearances and nine of their last 10 postseason appearances overall since 2004-05.
Leading the way for St John’s in scoring was Sophomore guard Aaliyah Lewis who had a career-high 20 points, which was highlighted by a 12-of-12 night from the charity stripe. Lewis has been able to do a bit of everything for this St. John’s team from defending the opposing team’s best player to running the offense.
Danaejah Grant also had a huge night for the team recording her team-high fourth double-double of the year with 18 points and 13 boards. Rounding out the scoring was Jade Walker who had 11 points.
Rebounds were a huge difference in this game as the Red Storm were able to grab 44 to the Black Knights 32. Army had two players in double-figure scoring as Kelsey Minato and Olivia Schretzman both recorded 19 points each.
It will be a battle of two successful New York College Women’s Basketball programs on Sunday, March 22 as St John’s will take on Fordham University on Sunday in the Second Round of the WNIT.
Fordham is no stranger to postseason play as under Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley the team made the WNIT Tournament in 2013, while winning the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2014 and also earning the Conferences NCAA Tournament bid for that year.
The game between St. John’s and Fordham will take place at Carnesecca Arena with the tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
