Less than 24 hours after earning BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, Aliyyah Handford has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Co-Player of the Week, it was announced this morning.

Handford shares the honor with Alyson Caiazzo of Manhattanville College, who recorded a triple-double of 19 points, 27 rebounds and 10 assists against Farmingdale State.

Aliyyah put forth a pair of spectacular performances for the Red Storm this weekend in the Seventh Annual St. John’s Chartwells Holiday Classic.

In the opener against Auburn, the junior tallied 22 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks, leading the Red Storm to its 10th-consecutive win to start the season.  In addition to shooting 7-of-14 from the floor against the Tigers, Handford also converted on all eight of her attempts from the charity stripe, a season-high.

Against Indiana State, Handford helped the Red Storm force two overtimes before eventually falling to the 10-1 Sycamores in the team’s first loss of the season.  The guard from Newark, N.J., tied a season-high with 27 points, in addition to grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out four assists and registering two steals in 44 minutes of action.

A WBCA Honorable Mention All-American from a season ago, Handford currently sits in a tie with teammate Danaejah Grant for the conference lead in scoring.

The Red Storm will be back in action on Dec. 30, traveling to Providence for the team’s second BIG EAST match up of the season.
