St. John’s Women’s Basketball Enters USA Today Sports Coaches Poll at No. 25

Following a 9-0 start to the 2014-15 campaign, the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team is back in the national rankings for the first time this year.  After receiving votes in both polls since the outset of the season, the Red Storm cracked the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll this week, checking in at No. 25.

While this is the Red Storm’s first appearance in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll in nearly two years, the Red Storm made a pair of appearances in the Associated Press Poll last season, climbing as high as No. 22 last February.

St. John’s is the only team from the BIG EAST currently featured in the Coaches Poll, as conference foe DePaul, previously at No. 25, fell out of the rankings this week.  Seton Hall is also receiving votes in the poll.

The Red Storm have been on fire this season, claiming victory in its first nine contests by an average margin of 13.3 points per game under third year Head Coach Joe Tartamella.

St. John’s  9-0 record marks the best start to season for the program since 2004-05, when the team rattled off 11-straight wins to kick off the year.

Tartamella has led his team to a few signature victories in the early going, knocking off perennial mid major power Marist on the road and besting nationally-acclaimed South Florida at the Sun Dome.  The Red Storm also picked up a home win against the Florida Gators, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Red Storm returns to action this weekend, playing host to the Seventh Annual St. John’s Chartwells Holiday Classic.  Coach Tartamella’s squad will kick off play on Saturday, facing off against Auburn at noon in Carnesecca Arena.
