New York City FC announced on Tuesday they have acquired Andrew Jacobson from FC Dallas in exchange for NYCFC’s highest pick in the third round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. A highly respected midfielder of Major League Soccer since 2009, Jacobson becomes the fifth player signed to NYCFC.
“I’m delighted to sign a player of Andrew’s experience and quality as we continue to build our roster ahead of the 2015 season” said New York City FC Head Coach, Jason Kreis. “He is a player my staff and I have liked for quite some time and we are thrilled to add such a versatile and competitive midfielder to our squad.’
“Andrew has a wealth of experience in this league having previously played for three MLS clubs and I think that will be important to us. It is also fantastic to have brought in our second midfielder in the space of a week”.
Andrew becomes the second midfielder signed to the club after Frank Lampard made the move form Chelsea last week. Spanish striker David Villa, goalkeeper Josh Saunders, and defender Jeb Brovsky fill the remaining spaces in what must currently be New York’s best five-a-side team.
The 28-year old American from Palo Alto, California comes to New York City after three and a half seasons at FC Dallas in which he made 96 appearances and scored five goals in 7,281 minutes of play. From 2009 to 2011 the midfielder racked up 42 caps over stints at D.C. United and Philadelphia Union, after an injury hampered year spent at FC Lorient in France’s Ligue 1.
Before New York City’s inaugural pre-season begins in January 2015, Jacobson will go on loan to Stabæk Fotball in Norway, where former U.S. Men’s National Team coach Bob Bradley is the manager.
“I am incredibly excited to be part of New York City FC’s historic first squad and cannot wait to give my all for this team and its fans.” said Andrew Jacobson. “I have respected Coach Kreis’ teams since I first came into the league and I am greatly looking forward to working with him. I know that he always builds teams that are competitive and play good soccer and I have no doubt he will be seeking to do the same with New York City FC from the very first season. The club has made some amazing signings so far and to be part of that list is a great feeling for me.”
