UPDATED: Pondexter leads Liberty over first place Dream 85-78

The New York Liberty (4-10) snapped a five game losing streak with an 85-78 victory over the Atlanta Dream.  Cappie Pondexter, who had 19 of her 23 points in the second half, led a 29-6 run which sparked the Liberty offense in the come from behind victory.

Atlanta took a 17-10 lead late in the first half, but the Liberty fought their way back to tie the game before the Dream scored again to lead 19-17 at the end of the first session.

The Dream held a 28-25 led in the second quarter , and then went on a 12-4 rally, led by six points from Angel McCoughtry, who led all scorers with 33 points, to go ahead 40-29.  New York responded with a 9-0 run of their own to go into the locker room down 40-38.

New York would tie and take the lead on their next two possessions on baskets from Pondexter and Alex Montgomery, who had 12 points.  With the score 49-46, Pondexter, Montgomery, and Plenette Pierson, who had 11 points, led a 9-0 run to put New York up 58-46. Atlanta responded with 8-0 rally of their own to cut the Liberty lead to 58-54.

The Dream kept the game with in five until Sugar Rodgers, who had 13 points, hit a three to spark a 7-0 run to put New York up 74-62.  McCoughtry made a lay up to cut the Liberty lead to 77-72 late  in the fourth quarter, but New York was able to hold on against the first place team in the Eastern Conference.

Tina Charles was the Liberty’s fifth player in double-figures with 12 points.

New York returns to action on Friday when they host the Chicago Sky, tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
