Cosmos Advance in US Open Cup Tournament with 2-0 Victory over Brooklyn Italians

The New York Cosmos advanced to the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Tournament with a 2-0 victory Over the Brooklyn Italians in Soccer action on Tuesday night.

It was a great atmosphere for both clubs as Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University was the host for two teams that have a great history of soccer in the Metropolitan area. For the Cosmos this was the first time the team ever had the chance to participate in the US Open Cup, while also making the long awaited return to Queens, NY.

The last time the Cosmos played in Queens was on August 17, 1976, as the franchise defeated the Washington Diplomats 2-0 at Shea Stadium in the NASL Playoffs.

New York continued to have success winning in Queens, leading the way on the offense for New York were Jimmy Ockford and Hagop Chirishian. Ockford scored his first goal in the 16th minute that was followed by a rebounded shot by Chirishian in the 29th minute.

For the Cosmos they will now get ready to host the New York Red Bulls at Shuart Stadium on Saturday, June 14, with the kick-off time for that match set for 8:30 p.m. EST.

In addition to getting ready to take on the Major League Soccer Club Red Bulls, the Cosmos also have to see how they will finish in the 2014 North American Soccer League Schedule.

The guys all have no time to rest as they will now prepare for an away game on Saturday, May 31 at the Fort Lauderdale Strikers before returning back to Shuart Stadium to host the Ottawa Fury FC on Sunday June 8, with match time for that game set for 5:00 p.m.
