New York Liberty Quotes after Pre-Season loss to the Connecticut Sun

Here are some post-game  quotes after the New York Liberty pre-season 60-44 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Thursday in WNBA action:

Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

On today’s game:

“We need to have our offense show up. We have 50 points not here yet; still the first half was just disgusting offensive-wise. I’m playing a lot of young players and there is a tremendous amount of game slippage from practice to the game right now but we need to overcome that. We have a post driven offense but our post players can’t score right now because they’re not Tina Charles or Plenette Pierson. Hopefully we get it worked out by the start of the season.”

The start of the season:

“We’re not ready for the season. Our offense is driven through the post and we don’t have post scorers right now.  We don’t have a scorer on the outside like Cappie (Pondexter). With this group we can’t score more than 50 points right now, but we still should have scored more than 13 points in the first half.”

On what changes he will make approaching the season:

“Hopefully I’ll have a few more practices to make them more court aware of what their responsibilities are.”

New York Liberty Guard Essence Carson:

On today’s game:

“Tough game, but there were some bright spots. We showed that when we play defense and rebound, we could be a really good team. Right now, we have a bunch of youngsters out there and it is a learning experience for them with many of them playing in their first professional game. As far as myself, I am getting a little more comfortable out there with improvements from last game. This is what the preseason is for.”

On returning to Madison Square Garden:

“It’s a different atmosphere; I mean it’s The Garden, that should say it all. There’s history here. We are back at the Mecca of Basketball. The fans were great, kids were great and we are looking to give them something to cheer about.”

Connecticut Head Coach Anne Donovan

On the Game:

“I thought we got off to a great start, we were on fire defensively. I don’t think we were as smooth offensively with theeleven o’clock tip. When you’re not  in sync you better play defense and that’s what we did to set the tone.”

On The Garden:

“There’s no place like The Garden, this is where dreams are born and there’s no better place to play basketball. That’s going to be a good team when they get everyone back, they’re going to do some good things in The Garden.”

Sun forward Chiney Ogwumike

On the Liberty and The Garden:

“They’re going to have a different team out there than we’re going to play in the first game. I tried to tell myself it wasn’t The Garden because this is my first time in New York and it was really exciting.”

On the Game:

“The speed of the game is great on the pro level, it’s a lot of stop and go. You’re going fast and then slowing down to make the right read. It was good to have two simulated games to have the experience and it’s going to be very helpful.”
