Here are some notes as the New York Islanders (29-36-9) play host to the Florida Panthers (27-41-8) in NHL action at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
3/29/14: NYI 2 vs. NJ 1 (SO)
Frans Nielsen scored the Islanders’ lone goal in regulation, and then added the deciding goal in the shootout, as the Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-1 Saturday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Brock Nelson also scored in the shootout, while Anders Nilsson stopped both Devils shooters he faced in the breakaway competition.
The Islanders look to extend their piont streak to five games tonight as they close out a three-game season series against the Florida Panthers. Florida has won each of the first two games, but the Islanders swept the series last season.
Back-To-Backs: The Islanders open their 16 set of back-to-back games tonight against Florida. They are 6-8-1 on the front-end and 6-7-2 on the back-end of back-to-backs this season. The club will total 17 back-to-back sets in 2013-14.
Shootout Leader: With his shootout tally Saturday vs. New Jersey, Frans Nielsen improved to 32-57 (56.1%) in career shootout attempts, extending his lead over TJ Oshie’s 26-47 (55.3%) ark as the most accurate active NHL player in shootouts (minimum 20 goals).
Last Four: The Islanders have taken seven of a possible eight points in their last four games (3-0-1).
The Islanders and Panthers game is set to air on the MSG Plus Network, with face-off set for 7:00 p.m.
