11/30/13: NYI 2 vs. WSH 3 (OT)
The Islanders earned one point Saturday night, but fell just short of a second, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Washington Capitals at Nassau Coliseum. Thomas Vanek gave the Islanders the lead with 1:51 to go in the third, but Nick Backstrom’s shorthanded goal forced OT, setting up Alex Ovechkin for the winner 2:07 into the extra frame.

de Haan Debut:
The Islanders recalled defenseman Calvin de Haan from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) on Thanksgiving and he made his season debut on Nov. 30. A first round pick (12th overall) in 2009, de Haanplayed 20:07 against the Capitals. He has three points (1g/2a) in 17 AHL games this season with the Sound Tigers.
Goaltender Anders Nilsson made 27 saves in his season debut Saturday against the Capitals. In six career NHL games, the third round (62nd overall) pick in 2009 has a 2.67 GAA with a .910 sv%.
On the Farm:
Bridgeport Sound Tigers center Ryan Strome was named the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for November. Strome tallied five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 12 games. The Islanders’ first round pick (fifth overall) in 2011 was also selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 1, 2013. Strome leads all AHL rookies in assists (18) and points (25) throught 20 games.
SMILE TRAIN GAME:
The Islanders continue their commitment to the community with their partnership with the Smile Train organization, which is the world’s leading cleft lip and palate charity, with the goal of raising funds and awareness.
Happening throughout the game tonight Islanders will hold a variety of fundraising initiatives, such as the Chuck-A-Puck intermission game, where fans can purchase numbered foam pucks that are thrown onto the ice with the hopes of landing it on the center ice bull’s-eye. Fans can also participate in the 50/50 raffle, taking place throughout the first two periods. Smile Train will have a collection table located at Gate 3 on the concourse offering information and giving fans the ability to make donations.
The game against the Islanders and Penguins is slated to air on the MSG Plus Network, with face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
