Islanders v Maple Leafs 1/19/13

Here are some notes as the New York Islanders (8-10-3) are on the road getting ready to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs (12-7-1) in NHL action on Tuesday night.

LAST GAME:

Frans Nielsen‘s trademark backhand capped off a thrilling shootout win, as the New York Islanders clipped the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 Saturday Night at Nassau Coliseum. Goaltender Kevin Poulin relieved an injured Evgeni Nabokov in the first period and stopped all three shootout attempts in the skills competition.
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP:
The Islanders begin a three-game road trip tonight with their first of three meetings this season against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Isles have won their last three games in Toronto, outscoring the Leafs 17-9, and are 3-0-2 overall their last five games against Toronto.

TEAM NOTES:
Streaking: John Tavares is on a five-game point and assist streak (2g/6a).
Four Straight: Replacing an injured Evgeni Nabokov early in the first period, Kevin Poulin appeared in his fourth consecutive Islanders game Saturday against the Red Wings. His previous high for consecutive appearances was three games (twice), most recently set Feb. 18-21, 2012.
Crucial Kills: The Islanders are 2-8-2 when they allow at least one power play goal and 6-2-1 when they do not.
Shot Blocker: Andrew MacDonald leads the NHL with 77 blocked shots. Last season he tied for third in the league with 123 blocks, two shy of the leader.
Heavy Hitter: Matt Martin leads the NHL with 98 hits. He’s led the league in hits in each of the last two seasons. In 2011-12, Martin’s 374 hits marked the highest total since hits became an official stat in 2005-06.
The Islanders and Maple Leafs game is set to air on the MSG Plus network,  with face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
