The New York Cosmos announced on Saturday that the team has agreed to terms with Brazilian defender Rovérsio, pending a physical.
Rovérsio, 29, is a 6-2 center back that began his career in Brazil with Santa Cruz Futebol Clube before moving on to play for First Division clubs in Europe such as Gil Vicente (Portugal), Osasuna (Spain) and most recently with Orduspor (Turkey).
“Rovérsio is a big presence in the back and a great addition to our lineup,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “With his size and experience, I believe he strengthens our defense. We’re extremely pleased to get him because he had other options in the U.S. and Europe.”
Rovérsio will join the Cosmos on their preseason trip in London and is expected to participate in the club’s exhibition match against Leyton Orient on Wednesday.
“The New York Cosmos are such a historic club that when Gio told me about the project, there were no words but yes,” Rovérsio said. “I am thrilled to wear the same shirt that my legendary countrymen Pelé and Carlos Alberto wore. This is a very special moment for me.”
