Head Coach Rex Ryan:

Opening Statement:

“Obviously, the reason everybody is here, I made the decision to go with Mark (Sanchez) as the starting quarterback this week. It was really a decision that I feel great about. I had a lot of opinions and I had conversations with a lot of different people, but, at the end of the day, it’s my decision. I’m definitely comfortable with the decision. I’m actually looking forward to seeing Mark play. I’m really for that matter, (excited) to see the entire football team play this Sunday against Jacksonville. It’s one where I obviously have to get this decision right, and I believe I have.”

On what the deciding factor was to name Sanchez the starter:

“I just think when I looked at everything; the biggest thing that I kept coming back to was what I had mentioned before about who gives us the best opportunity to win, in particular, this week. When I kept coming back to that, I believe the correct answer is Mark Sanchez. With that being said, I understand that he has to play better. He has to protect the ball better. The quarterback handles the football every snap. As a football team, we have to protect the football better than we have been. There are some things that we’re really doing a great job at right now. A thing that we’ve emphasized since the break was penalties. We’re maybe second in the league at that point, maybe averaging about three a game or a little more than that, so I’ve been really happy with that. The thing that we have not done a good job of is protecting the football. Obviously, Mark is the obvious guy we’re talking about. There are some interceptions that are going to happen. Quite honestly, the interception that (Patrick) Peterson makes in our game, I don’t care who is the quarterback, that was just an unbelievable play by that young man. Those (interceptions) you can live with. Some of the other ones we have to do a better job of. I believe Mark definitely understands where I’m coming from. I expect that not only Mark, but as a football team, (we need to) protect the ball better than we have.”

On when he told Sanchez he was the starter:

“Again this was a decision that took a great deal of thought. I’d rather not get into the specifics of this time or that time because, quite honestly, I can’t remember exactly what time it was. I feel comfortable with the communication I had with Mark and the quarterbacks. I did bring the quarterbacks into a meeting this morning, I don’t have the exact time, but I think it was when everyone was informed of who was going to be the starting quarterback. I sat in there and explained why I made the decision that I did. That’s basically what it was.”

On the qualities Sanchez has to give the team the best chance to win:

“First off, I believe we can win with all three quarterbacks. I know people will criticize that and I quite honestly don’t care. Tim (Tebow) has proven that he can win when given a chance to be a starter in this league. He took a team into a playoff. Mark has done the same thing here. Greg (McElroy), as a backup, you’re supposed to maintain a level or take it to a higher one and he took it to a higher level. He ended up having two really good drives for us to win that game. I have confidence in all three guys. I keep going back to Mark, who has won a lot of games for us. Now I know the record hasn’t been what it (once) was this year and (we) had a three-game losing streak to close out the last year, but I believe in Mark. I believe in all of our guys, but I believe Mark has a skillset that is pretty impressive. He can make all the throws. The thing that Mark needs to do a better job of is protecting the ball and know when it’s ok to take chances and know when you shouldn’t. I think (when it comes to) judgment, I believe, that Mark is going to do a better job at that.”

Quarterback Mark Sanchez:

On his reaction to Coach Ryan naming him the starter against Jacksonville:

“I feltconfident in my abilities. I think just coming off of this last weekend; things could be a lot worse. We could have lost the game. Like I said on Sunday, I was happy for Greg (McElroy). I’m thrilled for the team and I’m pleased with Rex’s decision and now it’s my job to go make him right. Not just him, but the rest of the guys in the locker room and to go and compete my butt off and play like I know how – to protect the football, and do it for the rest of the guys in this locker room.”

On if he ever thought he wouldn’t be the starter:

“I just waited for Rex to make his decision and let us know. That was it.”

On if he is aware of the importance of protecting the football:

“Of course; It’s a frustrating thing and then to have to step back on one hand, as much as you disagree with the decision, you never want to come out of the game, I understand where he’s coming from because everyone needs to be held accountable, myself included. Coach said it last week that we need to take care of the football and he also made the point after the game when he talked to me, that the play by (Patrick) Peterson, those plays happen. The ball gets batted and tipped at the line of scrimmage. Those kinds of plays happen. You get blindsided and the ball goes flying in the air, it happens to everybody, but when you make a bad throw on the first play of the game, when you make a bad read and force it to Jeff Cumberland, those can’t fly. He made his decision and we’re all held accountable. I think that was the most important thing.”

Quarterback Tim Tebow:

On how he is feeling:

“I did a little a bit more out there in practice today, so I’m feeling better every day and just trying to get better.”

On playing in Jacksonville:

“It’s definitely a lot of fun. I have a lot of family and friends who will be there. Jacksonville will always be a special place to me. It’s where I grew up and where a lot of my family still calls home. It will be a lot of fun.”

On Coach Ryan explaining his quarterback decision:

“He was very honest like he always is. I think you definitely respect that in a coach.”

On recovering from his injury:

“You just go one day at a time. For me, (I am) just trying to heal, learn the game plan and get a little bit better every day.”

Quarterback Greg McElroy:

On his reaction to Coach Ryan naming Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback:

“Well you know obviously, Coach Ryan’s going to do what’s in the best interest of the team and we trust him to make the best decision and, obviously we believe that that is the correct decision. We think that going forward, this is a great opportunity for all of us to continue to work, continue to improve and I know Mark’s going to play great on Sunday.”

On whether playing on Sunday gives him confidence that he could step up if need be in the future:

“I do. Obviously, if a certain situation were ever to come up, God forbid, I would like to know that I will be prepared and just continue to keep doing what I was doing before and continue to keep trying to improve. That’s really the number one thing for me at this point and obviously, to help Mark and Tim (Tebow) and that’s my number one goal. So I was glad I was able to get a little playing time and tried to make the most of it and hopefully I continue to build off that and try to get better.”

On whether he knows what his role will be on Sunday:

“I have no idea. I have no idea at this point. Obviously, it’s still a long way until Sunday. Rex, I’m sure, will be evaluating everything throughout the course of the week and then we’ll figure out what’s best for the team. I know that’s what Rex will do.”

On how he would describe the past few days since the game:

“It’s been fun, obviously.  It’s been a great couple of days because it’s after a win so you kind of enjoy that. Most of yesterday was kind of spent just getting ready for Jacksonville and watching them and obviously Monday was spent mostly to look back and reflect on the game and the mistakes and the things that you did well. So it’s been just a normal week to tell you the truth. It hasn’t really been anything different for me as an individual and I would assume that everyone else probably approached it the same way.”
