St. John’s University: Red Storm News and Notes 8/18/12

The athletics season for St. John’s University is already underway as the women’s soccer team winning the season-opener against George Mason by a final tally of 2-0.

The ladies had to sit through two delays due to the thunder and lightning storms in the area. When the storm subsided the Red Storm proceeded to strike as junior forward Morgan Ritter tallied her first90th-career goal with the game-winner in the first half

Junior forward Hailey Hemmer was set-up beautifully by rookie Shelby Halasz at the 90th minute, as both players also recorded their first points of their careers in the game.

There will be a bevy of events for fans of the Red Storm to look forward too, outside of the schedule of events. One such event for the fans of the men’s golf team have a great opportunity to meet alumnus Keegan Bradley, who is fresh off a win a the WGC-Bridgestone invitational and a third-plash finish at the PGA Championship.

Bradley will be doing a meet and greet with fans on Wednesday, August 22  for $175 at the completion of his practice round.

Those registering for the event will get the opportunity to watch the days practice round, will receive VIP Parking, food, drinks and an opportunity to meet the 2011 PGA Champion.

In September fans of the Red Storm  program will have the opportunity to participate in the Dribble For The Cure event on September 22. As the Red Storm basketball teams will join forces with the Pediatric Center Research Foundation (PCRF) and basketball great John Valley in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Those participating in the event will begin on a course winding through the St. John’s University campus, and will have the opportunity to take photos and obtain autographs from the St. John’s men’s and women’s baseball teams and coaches. There will also be refreshments, entertainment, games and face painting.

Everyone involved is asked to bring their own basketball, as they will be raising funds as they make their way through the campus. Those raising a lot of money will be eligible for prizes, and everyone involved will receive an official Dribble for the Cure t-shirt and goodie bag.

Another great event to look forward to in September is “An Evening with St. John’s Basketball,” to be held on Tuesday, September 25, at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan. Expected to be at this amazing event will be Red Storm men’s basketball coach Steve Lavin, women’s coach Joe Tartamella, Hall of Fame Coach Lou Carnesecca and NBA legend and featured guest Rick Barry for an evening of celebration.
