New York Islanders ink keeper Nabokov to one-year deal

The New York Islanders announced through an official press release and on their official site that goal keeper Evgeni Nabokov has agreed to a one-year contract for the 2012-13 season. Nabokov has been a steady presence in the cage, leading the team in wins, GAA and save percentage.

“I am thrilled to commit to this team for next season,” Nabokov said in the official Islanders press release.  “We have a great group in the locker room of young talented players, and we are heading in the right direction. I’m excited to have the chance to help get this team back to the playoffs.”

The veteran keeper continues to climb the list of active leaders in the NHL in victories, as the Kamenogorsk, KZ-native is ranked 22 all-time trailing Martin Brodeur (651), Roberto Luongo (335) and Nikolai Khabibulin (328).

“Evgeni has proven that he can still play at an elite level in the NHL,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “He’s given us a chance to win every night and we’re excited to have him back for another season.”

Nabokov and the Islanders will next be in action on Saturday, when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
