The New York Mets announced through their official site, not only the promotional schedule for the 2012 season, but also the commemorative patch the team will wear to honor former catcher Gary Carter.

Carter passed away on February 16, after a very valiant battle against brain cancer. The patch the team will wear features a black home plate with ‘KID 8’ in white lettering. The Mets are planning to wear the commemorative patch on their jerseys for the 2012 season, starting with the first Spring Training game on March 5.

The franchise also announced on Saturday the promotional schedule for the 2012 season, as the Mets will give away 490,000 items to fans in celebration of the 50th anniversary season.

Some of the highlighted giveaways include:

Magnetic Schedule: The Mets will ring in the 50th Anniversary on Opening Day, on Thursday, April 5 against the Atlanta Braves with a 2012 magnetic schedule. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Mets 50th Anniversary Bobblehead Series: The Mets will have five figurines depicting iconic Mets from each decade in the team history.

Mets Hall of Fame Induction:  New York will honor their franchise saves leader John Franco, by inducting the closer into the team’s Hall of Fame on Sunday, June 3 at 1:10 p.m.  Franco will be inducted in an on-field in a pre-game ceremony prior to the game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The first 25,000 fans attending the game will receive a commemorative cap presented by Citi.
