The New York Islanders (15-20-6) had a three game homestand winning streak snapped by the Philadelphia Flyers (26-12-4) in a 3-2 loss on Thursday night. New York tried to hold the positive momentum at home with two goals in the third period, but time ran out on the Islanders comeback.

Philadelphia opened up the scoring on a Scott Hartnell (19) wrister at the 17:20 mark in the first period of play. Wayne Simmonds (11) recorded a wrister at the 13:08 mark in the second, before the Islanders started their attempt at a comeback.

Kyle Okposo (10) netted the first goal for New York, tallying a wrister at the 0:22 mark in the third period. The Flyers responded when Sean Couturier (8) made the game 3-1 at 18:30. Islanders center John Tavares (15) cut the lead one last time on a nifty backhander at the 19:44 mark, before the clock ran out of time before a third goal could be recorded.

Tavares was named to the NHL All-Star team earlier in the day, as the Mississauga, Ontario-native will participate in his first All-Star game in Ottawa.  The center also extended his point streak to career-best seven games, with the helper on Okposo’s goal.

The Islanders will finish this three game homestand on Saturday, with a game against the Buffalo Sabres. The game between the Isles and Sabres is set to air on the MSG Plus network, with face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
