Rangers win shootout thriller over Coyotes: 2-1

The New York Rangers (27-9-4) won a shootout thriller over the Phoenix Coyotes (20-18-5) by a final of 2-1 in NHL action on Tuesday night. For the most part, the Blueshirts and Yotes were kept off the scoreboard until Ruslan Fedotenko (5) tallied the first goal of the game.

Fedotenko recorded a snap shot at the 2:27 mark of the third period, to snap the scoreless drought. Phoenix was able to find the game-tying goal when Radim Vrbata (20) tallied a snap shot, which send the two teams into overtime.

Vrbata scored the first goal in the shootout, which gave Phoenix the 1-0 lead at the time. Blueshirts sniper Marian Gaborik notched the extra session up on a wrister, as the winger skated as the fifth shooter in the frame.

The shootout stood at 1-1, until Derek Stephan propelled the Blueshirts to their fifth straight victory, on a wicked snap shot. Stephan was the 11th participant in the session, helping New York to a 13-3-2 record at Madison Square Garden.

New York will end this two-game homestand with a Thursday night game against the Ottawa Senators. The Blueshirts/Senators game is slated to air on the MSG network, with face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
