Rangers power up to tame the Panthers: 6-1

The New York Rangers (17-6-4) powered up on two extra-man opportunities to tame the Florida Panthers (16-9-5) in hockey action on Sunday night. Derek Stepan (7) led the Blueshirts offense with his two goal performance, as his father in attendance at Madison Square Garden.

Brad Richards (11) opened the scoring for New York, as the center recorded a wicked wrister on a power play opportunity at the 11:40 mark for a 1-0 lead.  Richards now has five goals and seven assist in the last seven games for the Rangers.

The Blueshirts converted on their second extra-man advantage when Artem Anisimov (6) netted a sniper of a snap shot at the 17:27 mark. Florida pounced back to cut the lead at 18:07 when Erik Gudbranson recorded his first goal in a Panthers uniform.

New York tamed the Panthers in the second period, scoring four unanswered goals from Steve Eminger (2), Marian Gaborik (15), and Stephan’s two goals in the frame. Derek had a beauty of a coast-to-coast move at the 5:45 mark, ending the rush on a shot that just went under the cross-bar of the Panthers cage.

The Rangers had 11 of the 18 skaters in the game record at least one point in the game, countering the offensive effort was the Blueshirts blueline-killing off seven of the Florida’s extra-man advantage. New York keeper Henrik Lundqvist was outstanding as always with his 20 saves.

Madison Square Garden will get to see the Rangers in action one last time, before the team hits the road for a seven day stretch. The Blueshirts will host the Dallas Stars, for a game scheduled to air on the MSG network…face-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
