On Star Wars/Stand Up to Cancer night at Citi Field, not even the Imperial Forces could inspire the New York Mets (71-77) to victory, as the Metropolitans fell by a final of 3-2 to the Washington Nationals (69-77) on Tuesday night baseball action.
In what started out to be a real pitchers/lightsaber duel between Dillon Gee and Chien-Ming Wang, as both starters match each other with scoreless frames until the bottom of the fifth inning.
New York jumped on the board first as Lucas ‘Skywalker’ Duda lifted an RBI single to right field, which plated the first run. An errant play by Jason Werth, allowed the Mets to take a 2-0 lead.
Gee, who had been cruising along, started to run into turbulence in the top of the sixth; as the ‘Morse’ was strong with the Nationals in that frame. ‘Morse’ as in first baseman and outfielder Michael Morse-who tied the game up at 2-2 for Washington; as the utility player hit a booming double (34) to center field.
Washington took the first lead of the game when Ryan Zimmerman drove in the eventual game-winning run. New York tried to strike back in the bottom of the ninth as back-to-back hits by Jose Reyes and Ruben Tejada set the stage for Duda-but sadly the Mets young slugger struck out to end the offensive threat.
Lucas led all offensive players finishing with a 3-for-5 night at the dish, while also driving in a run. Also recording a three hit day was Reyes, who regained the lead in the Battle Title race.
New York now has a four game losing streak, along with now having lost the first two games of this series against the Nationals by identical one-run scores.
Mike Pelfrey (7-11, 4.66 ERA) will take the hill for New York in Game Three and is slated to take on Brad Peacock-who is making his debut with the Nationals. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
