It is always a special thing to return to your hometown, to be able to have all of your friends and family watching. Instead of Cappie Pondexter returning home to Chicago and dominating, instead she and the New York Liberty (16-13) were edged by the Chicago Sky (14-15) in WNBA action on Saturday.
Leading the sky with a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining, was Brooklyn-native Epiphanny Prince. The Rutgers product finished the night with 10 points coming off the bench, shooting 3-for-9 from the field, and two assists.
Leading the Liberty was Plenette Pierson, who finished the night with 19 points. Rounding out the scorers were Nicole Powell (15) and Pondexter (14).
Pondexter was held to two points in the first half of play, broke the halftime tie with the first eight points of the third quarter. The Chicago-native had back-to-back three’s to help the Liberty open up a 48-42 lead. The Liberty’s defense let them down on this night though, allowing the Sky to shot 49% during the course of the night.
Pierson finished her fine shooting night going 9-for-13 from the field, while also grabbing six rebounds, the enforcer also tallied three block assists, grabbed one steal and one assist. Rounding out the New York scorers were Kia Vaughn (12) and Essence Carson (7).
These two teams will meet again, as the Liberty look to keep home court advantage at the Prudential Center on Tuesday. New York will welcome Liberty-great Kym Hampton to the ‘Ring of Honor’ on that night with the festivities slated for 7:00 p.m.
Downtown Dribble announced: The New York Liberty announced on their site that the team will hold their first ever Downtown Dribble, as a thank you to the city of Newark. The community activity and exercise event will take place on September 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Championship Plaza-which is located on the Northeast corner of the Prudential Center.
Tickets to the event are $25.00 per person, and a fan will receive one ticket to the Liberty game vs. the Minnesota Lynx, one basketball and one t-shirt.
