After one of the most intense and physical battled as of yet against favorites Cruz Azul, New York City FC is going to have some work to do if they hope to be a part of the Leagues Cup Tournament.
The Cruz Azul match is one that was a fun one to be a part of in terms of atmosphere and just seeing the seer intensity by both clubs.
New York has a ton to be proud of when it comes time for the match, including the fact that they were able to respond and come back in scoring a goal, being able to play some tremendous overall defense and maintaining possession of the ball.
It was just the relentless play by Cruz Azul that won them the match and three points, and allowed for the Liga MX side to have favorable position with the next leg of the tournament.
Scoring the goal for the Boys in Blue was Max Murray, and that tally was the franchises first set-piece goal of the tournament.
For Murray the goal was a significant one as it was his first, and he joins Forward Agustín Ojeda, Defender Tayvon Gray and Defender Nico Cavallo in being able to score in the Leagues Cup.
The next challenge for the squad is going to be a fascinating one as Club Necaxa comes into town. The team featured on Netflix and owned by Eva Longoria (Actress and producer) along with Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney in the second overall meeting.
Necaxa and New York City FC met in 2016 with the Liga MX side winning 2-1.

The 2026 edition of the Necaxa and New York City FC clash is going to be on August 13, and the guys are going to need a high scoring match as well.
To be able to have a chance in continuing on in the tournament the franchise is going to need a high-scoring, multi-goal victory to surpass teams like Columbus Crew (+3), FC Dallas (+3), or the current top four.
Something that would also be helpful are losses by Columbus, Dallas, LAFC, and Real Salt Lake to lose their final matches or finish with poor goal differentials to clear a path into the top.
The main focus though is gaining the three points on the 13th in order to keep hope alive in the tournament, and these next few days are all about preparation for that meeting.
