Rainy Day Road Win for New York City FC against Rival Red Bulls

The Hudson Derby for the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup had a bit of everything when it came time for action, it had physical play, it had the passion and support of both fan bases and it had plenty of scoring, as it was an early test to see what color New York is going to be.

With the possibility of rain in the forecast things were only raining goals as it turns that New York is Blue with the New York City FC 3-1 victory against the Red Bulls.

It was all about the corner opportunities as set-piece deliveries was the key, along with some brilliant play by Maxi Moralez to help the team gain the victory.

Moralez assisted on all the goals in the match, as Kai Trewin, Raul Gustavo, and Thiago Martins found the back of the net.

Because of this performance Maxi becomes the seventh player since 1995 to record three assists in a U.S Open Cup match.

Fans are encouraged to enjoy these thoughts from Head Coach Pascal Jansen:

The lone goal for the Red Bulls came from the foot of Julian Hall.

There was a ton of emotions throughout the night, as some of the defensive play got both sides into what was happening on the pitch.

The guys were plenty into the match as well, often communicating with the officials and trying to see how the night was going to go tempo wise.

New York City FC now advances to the Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup for the third time in Club history, and more importantly regain momentum right before another rivalry match against D.C. United on May 3.

This was the first victory for New York City FC against the Red Bulls in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, while the franchise has a 7-6-2 overall record.

As for the Red Bulls it should be fascinating to see what is going to happen to the squad that is in the process of developing and getting themselves into the MLS Season.

Hall is one of the bright spots for the team as with the goal he now has nine goals this season across all competitions.

Getting the assist on the Julian goal was Cade Cowell and that was the first career U.S. Open Cup assist and his fourth assist of the season across all competitions.

For the Red Bulls they are going to have to turn around Quickly as they face FC Dallas at Sports Illustrated Stadium on May 2.
