US Open Cup starts with a thriller for the Red Bulls in the Round of 32

For the Red Bulls of New York, the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup opened with a bang, in what was a great showing of speed, scoring opportunities and maintaining possession of the ball the Red Bulls of New York was able to defeat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds by the score of 3-1.

With the victory the guys set up a Round of 16 match and a Hudson River Derby between themselves and New York City FC.

Before the information on that though the talk right now is on the Red Bulls and for the second match in Harrison they looked like a team that played with many positive attributes.

They guys were doing great when it came time for communication with each other, they did great when it came time for showcasing the speed and most importantly when it came time for finishing they were able to display that in the finest of ways.

The finest of finishes came from the foot of Captain Emil Forsberg as he got the first goal of the game on what can only be something that we refer our fans to visit the team’s official page to watch the ball and how it arched and bent to become the first goal of the match.

Forsberg’s goal can easily be one of the Top 10 plays on the highlight reel and is only the start of the type of play that fans can hopefully see from the Captain this season.

Then the team got a brace from Julian Hall (Zakrzewski) getting a brace.

Things got close for Julian when it came time for the hat trick, and it is incredible to see the Develompent and growth of the homegrown player as the season progresses.

For Zakrzewski (Hall) the goals were the first and second of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup goals, along with seven goals across the matches played thus far this season.

An interesting stat and milestone compliments of the Red Bulls media relations department includes the fact that goalkeeper John McCarthy was able to extend his Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup unbeaten streak to 11 matches, going 7-0-4 in that span.

As was mentioned before now the intrigue builds with the Round of 16 and the upcoming Hudson Rivery Derby match between the squad and NYCFC.

Before that happens though the Red Bulls go on the road to Stade Saputo to face Montreal before returning to Sports Illustrated Stadium to host DC United.
