As the NWSL season is progressing quickly, so is the schedule for the Washington Spirit as the team looks to improve after the 2-2 Draw against Racing Louisville on March 20.
Thus far in the three matches played they have made improvements and showed something different in each match.
They are going to today (Wednesday, March 25) play a Utah team that is a fascinating test for them and they are going to do so at Audi Field.
In the matches played thus far the Spirit have a 3-5-2 mark, including a 2-1-1 mark since Utah rejoined the league in 2024.
With the ladies matches played in 2024 and 2025 the team in Washington D.C. fared well in sweeping those matches.
One of the newest additions to the team Lucia Di Guglielmo and Head Coach Adrián González sat with members of the media on Tuesday to discuss various topics.
Lucia shared a bit as to what it was like being recruited by the Washington Spirit and some of the versatility that she is able to bring to the team so far.
Di Guglielmo is the second person on the Spirit roster to come to the team from Italy, and has an incredible roster as she has played with the Italy National team and also played with the Series A Club Empoli and Roma.
Lucia was a big part of Roma winning back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024 and qualify for the Champions League .
Thus far she has seen some time with the team and impressed not only the fans in attendance but also those that cover the team.
“They (the Washington Spirit) got in touch with her and in her mind she had an idea of being away from Italy and at first when the chance came along she was very happy,” Di Guglielmo said. ” I love being able to challenge myself and am very happy to be in the NWSL.”
There is a huge difference for Lucia when it comes time for Playing in Series A and the NWSL and that is something that she is excited for saying, “The NWSL has great quality when it comes time for the play of women’s soccer and I am very happy and proud to be here.” She also adds, “I love to challenge myself and am happy to be in the league.”
She and the rest of the roster are gong to have a huge challenge ahead of them today not only playing against Utah but doing so and after only five days of recovery.
That was something Coach González, ” It is not ideal having the busy schedule, but we need to accept it and find the best way to manage players. We are just trying to manage the training. Trin is doing good in good shape we’ll see what happens and make decisions tomorrow. We have different options to rotate when we need it.”
One of the biggest challenges for the Coaching staff is the fact that they are trying to ensure that the athletes get the most complete recovery time, giving them time to reset for the matches and also allowing for the competitive match schedule as well.
“We as of now are trying to combine the learning from the last game with the next one we always try to have short weeks with a lot of games, takeaways from each game. In this case we are combining the things we are doing well and what we can bring in for each match,” said González “We want to get better each match.”
The last time that the Spirit and Utah met it was last May and things were played to a 3-3 draw of a nailbiter in where the Washington D.C. based NWSL team scored the third goal of the match in the 12th minute.
For the team this match at Audi Field is going to be the last home fixture for the month of April as they are having to prepare of a long road stretch.
The match between the Spirit and Royals is scheduled for 7 pm and is going to stream on Victory+ and the national TV Networks.
