Stage is set for the BIG EAST Championship

With back-to-back thrillers in the BIG EAST Semis a showdown of No. 1 and No. 2 is going to go down at Madison Square Garden on Saturday (today).

St. John’s is going to play for the Fifth BIG EAST Tournament in the history of the program, while achieving another milestone in the victory against Seton Hall.

With the team’s 78-68 victory against Seton Hall the guys were able to etch the names into the team’s history books by logging the 2,000 victory in program history.

Fun fact from the St. John’s Public Relations department is the fact that the team is now ranked eighth all-time in total victories in NCAA Division 1 Basketball history as they are now amongst names such as Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, Temple and Syracuse.

The Red Storm had themselves a balanced offense led by Zuby Ejiofor as he had a team-high 20 points.

One of the biggest keys for the Red Storm came from the bench as Joson Sanon had himself a tremendous night with his 15 points as he was able to connect on three of the team’s four three-pointers.

Dillon Mitchell and Bryce Hopkins also had themselves a fine showing by reaching the double figure mark by having 13 points apiece.

Then in the second portion of the night, it was a battle between UConn and Georgetown as the Hoyas showed why they are going to be a team to watch for by showing heart and resilience throughout the night.

Braylon Mullins had himself a night to remember in becoming the first freshman in UConn history with 20 points and five rebounds. There were only two players in double-figures, but overall, as a team the Huskies had themselves a balanced night as they had seven different players score at least six points.

Things are going to make for a great championship Saturday as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams battle it out for the BIG EAST Championship. It was amazingly St. John’s just beating UConn for the Regular Season Championship and this is the chance for those that are Huskies fans to gain a measure of redemption.

For anyone that is a St. John’s fan this is a chance to go back-to-back in winning the Conference Championship.

The rivalry between St. John’s and UConn is one that shows that tonight is going to be a close one with the Red Storm holding a narrow 4-3 all-time advantage entering into today’s game.

St. John’s and UConn have split the two previous championship game matchups (1999,2000) with UConn winning in 2024 and 1999 and the Red Storm winning in 2000 and 1980.
