In the first day of the Tournament there were two upsets as No. 10 seed Xavier defeated No. 7 seed Marquette 89-87 and No. 11 seed Georgetown upsetting No. 6 DePaul in the finale of Day One by a final of 63-56.
In the first game of the day it was Providence setting up the rematch against St. John’s by defeating Butler 91-81.
The Red Storm looking to become back-to-back in winning the regular season Champions and winning the tournament have a fascinating test ahead of them as they are waiting to see if they face either No. 5 Creighton and or No. 4 Seton Hall as these two teams are playing as this article is being typed.
Also in games to be played today are Xavier taking on No. 2 UConn and a classic that is going to be played against Georgetown and Villanova.
For the Georgetown and Villanova game that one is going to be one that is going to be etched in both team’s record books as that is going to be the 100th meeting between these historic basketball programs.
Georgetown looked great in defeating DePaul as the Hoyas defense was the biggest key in getting them to the next round of the Tournament.
As for the Red Storm they were able to have four players in double-figure scoring with Zuby Ejiofor led the way with his 21 points followed by Oziyah Sellers, Bryce Hopkins and Ian Jackson all having 14 points.
Ejiofor being named BIG EAST Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year after averaging 16.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game for the Red Storm.
Some of the other impressive numbers for Zuby is the fact that he is the only conference player to rank top 10 in his respective conference while leading the team in those four categories.
With the Second Day of the BIG EAST Tournament under way those that are following the local area teams are getting to see if Seton Hall can set the stage for another classic BIG EAST rivalry in possibly facing St. John’s in that Semifinal matchup.
