It is a fascinating journey for the Washington Spirit as the ladies started the 2025 Season down in Florida in the NWSL Challenge Cup and taking on Orlando.
Since then they were building on the foundation of the team and the culture of a franchise that has made it to the NWSL Championship four times (2016, 2021, 2024, 2025) and winning the NWSL Championship in 2021.
The first part of making the foundation solid was in February 2024 when Adrián González went from Interim status to becoming the Head Coach of the team.
There were so many highlight moments for the Spirit as they gave themselves a chance at the 2025 NWSL Championship and now the fans in the area getting to see Croix Bethune and Tara McKeown have performances that gave excitement and energy to the crowd.
Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury made it to the NWSL highlight reel on several occasions and even earned the NWSL Player of the Year honors in November.
Then the foundation became even more solid when they named Haley Carter and Nathan Minion as the President of Soccer Operations and General Manager respectively.
Carter and Minion were immediately welcomed to the Washington D.C. area by doing a Zoom session with the members of the media covering the team and there was a depth and detailed information that was seen by both.
They were both open and honest about what was happening with the ongoing contract negotiations with Trinity Rodman and how the leadership style that they both bring is going to help to shape the Spirit for 2026 and beyond.
Carter amazingly was a part of the Orlando Pride team that the Spirit got the chance to face in the NWSL Challenge Cup, and not only that but had some moments of bonding with the Spirit during her time in the NWSL.
Haley has a wide range of experiences that she is going to bring to the squad including the fact that she was an assistant coach for the Afghanistan women’s national team and goalkeeper coach for the Antigua and Barbuda women’s national team.
Carter also was a goalkeeper on the Houston Dash during the 2013-2016 seasons.
Minion being the interim GM of the team since March, having been with the team since the former president of soccer operations Mark Krikorian contract ended.
The main talk for the majority of the Zoom session between the duo and the members of the media is the contract of Rodman.
Most recently there was a deal in place between the Spirit and Trinity that was voted by NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, with that deal violating the ‘spirit of the rules.’
Both Carter and Minion were open and honest when it came time for talking with the NWSL and the Agents of Rodman to try to keep Trinity in the Washington D.C. Area.
The one thing that was seen was the depth of knowledge Carter had when it came time for being in the President of Soccer Operations role and how things are going to be different for her now that she is in the Washington D.C. area and with the strong culture in place.
For sure the biggest thing is now just waiting on pins and needles for those that are Spirit fans to see how the roster is going to be shaped and what the NWSL, The Spirit and Rodman are going to do next.
