Leagues Cup Thrills fans with Doubleheader at Sports Illustrated Stadium

Fans of sports and soccer were in for a wonderful day in Harrison, New Jersey as four franchises took to the pitch to thrill all in attendance.

With spots in the tournament on the line the matches were vital, especially for the opening team New York City FC in staying alive.

The Boys in Blue going up against Club León and showing the style that is capturing the hearts of the faithful. NYCFC were aggressive, they were able to maintain possession of the ball and they were able to play stellar defense in being able to win and stay in the League Cup Tournament.

Final score for the NYCFC match was 2-0 but there was so much more than just the score though, there was impressive play by newcomer Nicolás Fernández Mercau as he showed that he is acclimating with his new mates quite nicely.

Matt Freese continues to etch his name in the NYCFC iconic moments by making a penalty save during the course of the game.

Freese thus far during the course of his career with the franchise is putting together such an incredible highlight reel of saves.

Not only is he doing that, but Matt is now the all-time leader in clean sheets in Leagues Cup with two, as he surpassed Luis Barraza.

Then there were the goals of the match by Alonso Martínez and Agustín Ojeda that led the way in the three points.

Martínez is now in the history books when it comes time for contributions with the club as with the goal and assist, he now has the ninth most across all competitions.

Some other cool facts from the folks at NYCFC include the fact that Ojeda got his first career goal in League Cup play and the franchise saw Justin Haak being a part of the first career goal contribution.

Then in a very rare and wonderful opportunity for soccer fans CF Montreal played outside of Canada to take on fan favorite Toluca in the second part of the doubleheader.

In an incredible atmosphere Toluca showed why they are one of the top teams in the Liga MX, by putting on a master class of being able to maintain possession while playing an incredible defensive style of play.

Montreal may have gotten the early goal by Efrain Morales; it was Toluca roaring back with goals by Jesús Ricardo Angulo and Paulinho to win them the match.

And the goal by Paulinho wasn’t just any goal, but it was a highlight reel style bicycle kick to gain the lead.

After that if anyone ever wanted to watch a master class on how to play defense and controlling a tempo of the match, many may point to what Toluca did in the Second Half of the match against Montreal of just that.

For anyone that has never seen a Toluca match that is something to be experienced someday as they brought a fun and festive atmosphere to Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Speaking of Toluca, they are going to be the team that goes up against New York City FC next in League Cup action, as the two clubs change settings and head to Yankee Stadium for the next portion of the Tournament.

Meanwhile for CF Montreal they return to Stade Saputo to take on Puebla on August 5th.
