Almost 22 fights later, the 22nd to happen on Saturday Zayas is becoming one of the faces of Boxing and Top Rank thanks to the combination of personality and fighting skills.
This is going to be one of the toughest fights yet though, as it’ll be the rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico renewed as Zayas takes on Garcia for the vacant WBO junior middleweight world champion.
Those that get to attend fight night are also going to get to see Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington take on Mateus Heita and Emiliano Fernando Vargas going against Alexander Espinoza.
It was duing the Heita versus Carrington Press Conference that the sounbite of the Top Rank Press Conference came along, as the unbeaten Mateus gave the audience a buzz.
“I don’t see anything special in him. This is just another challenge that I have to overcome in my career,” said Heita, during the course of the Q and A session and that got the Brownsville-native Carrington to awaken.
Shu Shu responded by saying, “I take every fight as a championship fight, but I’m definitely taking him very seriously. You know, he’s 14-0 with nine knockouts. I’m 15-0 with nine knockouts. He deserves to have this opportunity to get this fight. And, but I’m definitely going to show why I am special. And I’m definitely going to show why there are levels to this. And you’re going to see that it might not even go to full 12 rounds. It’s going to be a demolition. It’s going to be a surgical beatdown.”
Carrington made a splash during the press conference in another way as during the course of the Q and A session he got challenged by Yan Santana (14-0, 12 KOs) which gave the Top Rank Audience another memorable moment of Carrington’s response which is captured in the video below.
Santana is going to be a part of six title fights that Top Rank is presenting on Saturday, as he takes on Aaron Alameda for the Vacant NABO Featherweight Title.
There are going to be a ton of great fights planned for Saturday and stories to be written in the next two days.
Top Rank continues the promotional tour of the Garcia and Zayas fight week as the company presents the weigh-ins on Friday night and then the Fight Night events on Saturday.
