In the team’s 2025 Home Openining Match against Kansas City the ladies showed a great amount of heart and fight but ulimately fell to Kansas City by the score of 2-0.
Playing in front of 19,254 at Audi Field the ladies had plenty of opportunities, but it was the visiting side that found the back of the net and got the three-points on the road.
There were a ton of positive stats on the side of the Spirit that includes ten corner kicks, 11 shots and having a standout performance by Leicy Santos.
Santos was the creator and innovator of the spirit offense and connected the defense and forwards and led when it came time for the chances that came the closest to finding the back of the cage.
On the defensive side of the field leading the way was Aubrey Kingsbury was a big part of the match and made one of the biggest saves of the night on a chance by Temwa Chawinga.
Kingsbury along with teammate Ashley Hatch and Head Coach Jonatan Giráldez joined with members of the Spirit media via Zoom to chat about the match and gave overall thoughts on what the Home Opener was like.
The things that Kingsbury reflected on that was memorable was what it was like being able to play in front of a sell out crowd as she had felt like she had to pinch herself on seeing the support of the Spirit Faithful.
Those faithful followers got to see a ton of other cool moments such as seeing the play of Trinity Rodman as she recovering from a back injury.
It had seemed as if there was a moment when Rodman had scored shortly after coming into the match, but that goal was reversed on a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Overall the energy around the team is posistive as the team throughout most of 2024 showed resilience as well, as it is in moments like these when those that are on the roster start to see what it is going to take to win matches and get themselves back to being in the Championship match.
The ladies are back to training and preparation as they get ready to take on Bay FC on March 28 at Audi Field with the start of the match scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
