HERstory made as Washington Spirit Host Historic Doubleheader

It was a historical day at Audi Field as the Washington Spirit resumed NWSL play with a 4-1 victory against Kansas City in NWSL action on 8/25. In addition, Chelsea and Arsenal completed a historic doubleheader in front of a crowd of 17,130 at Audi Field.

As the Washington Spirit currently are preparing for a road match at Snapdragon Stadium against the San Diego Wave.

To rewind things a bit in the team’s homecoming match against Kansas City there were a ton of amazing moments as there were five of the six Olympians getting the Start in the Spirit Starting XI.

Helping to lead the way in scoring was Paige Metayer, Ouleye Sarr, Trinity Rodman and Leicy Santos while the Current saw a goal by Temwa Chawinga .

As for the Chelsea and Arsenal match in what was a close 1-0 victory for Chelsea as Sandy Baltimore scored the game-winner in a thriller of a match.

The hope for many fans of International Women’s Soccer is the fact that this is the first of many trips of teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal to the United States. This plus with the NWSL Participation in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup is a great first step in expanding the sport of women’s soccer.

Getting back to the Washington Spirit thanks to the victory against the current the ladies are currently in Second Place in the NWSL standings as the team at the top is the unbeaten Orlando Pride.

Thus far the Spirit play well as they have a 10-0-0 mark when they lead at halftime. Another interesting note compliments of the Washington Spirit PR department is the fact that they were able to get back-to-back three goal victories for the first time in club history.

The next test against the Wave is going to be a tough one for the ladies of Washington D.C. as in the last two meetings the Sprit earned a draw. The ladies are looking for the combination of the new experience of the 2024 Olympic games as well as the newer faces of the team to help them to gain the three points on the road on September 1. The action starts at 8:00 p.m. with fans hoping to catch the action can do so on the Paramount Plus webpage.
